James 1:27
27Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

Emphasis, “and to keep oneself unstained by the world”. But what if the world has become a part of the church? Have we adapted the the world’s value system which is based on money, power and pleasure?

Is this a literal thing that we are to care for orphans and widows. Why so much significance on these two things? Ive heard churches talk about this several times, yet I’ve never known of any orphans and maybe 2 or 3 widows. Why not the poor and abused in general, widening the effect for us. Just curious

Brilliant, in our immaturity one could believe you are speaking of the church as an organization (religion) being corrupt (church bashing). Having read much of your thoughts here, your emphasis is that we are the church (individual accountability, no doubt). This is a calling for each of us to reflect on oneself. Not to evaluate the organization known as a church.

James 1: 22-24 fits well with this, “But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like.”

The clue is …”keeping oneself”… which is first person (singular)
