What do I do on Halloween Night? This seems to be the really big question these days. Why? Does it really matter what my family does? As promised, I am posting for the world to see the behind the scenes of the Diehl family Halloween night. I have emptied my email box so that I can make room for the complaints. God’s speed to you all.
First, I am not condemning anyone that chooses to celebrate Halloween. We all have liberties and I have bound my home alone. And yes you are correct in assuming that I do not encourage its participation to anyone.
So what do we do? Up to this year it has been quite comical. If we are home, I will turn the porch light on as I do every other night of the year. This lets the world know that the Diehl’s are home. And within just a few minutes, my lovely wife is flipping the switch off. We battle for light switch control and as you have probably guessed, yes, I lose!
She had a perfectly good explanation; just ask her, that is until this year. She did not want to send a mixed message to our little James who is now 7. She felt it was too difficult for him to understand why our neighbors could dress up and get candy and he could not. She was right, but if you recall I said until this year.
This year is different; my son understands that he can have candy any day of the week and that he can dress up any time also. He also understands that this day has been dedicated to the dead and ungodly things of this world. Don’t believe me just go to any grocery store, pharmacy or department store and what do you see? Ghost, blood and body parts!!! Where are the angel costumes when you need them?
The other evening as my son assisted me in putting together gospel tracts (really cool ones I might add), he made the comment that he could not wait to share these with the trick-or-treaters this year. He understands that if he is out trick-or-treating, the kids that would have come to our door wont get the opportunity to receive some of his really good candy or one of his really cool tracts.
Let me head off the obvious question? If I am handing out candy, am I not participating in Halloween? Good point, kind of. Let me explain, I would not intentionally ignore the opportunity to an invitation to share what I have (including the testimony of the Lord) to all that come to my home. Halloween is no different. If one of the neighbor kids knocked on the door and asked me for candy on September 3rd, I would give he or she some. Quite frankly, if you’ve been in our home you would know that the odds would be great that we would have candy in the house. I love candy!
I know these kids are here for candy, so GOOD CANDY they will get! With a bonus of some cool novelty type gospel tracts they will enjoy and share with their friends.
We are all called to sow seeds, that God will reap the harvest.
Look back at my post: Boo On You click here. Why is everyone so upset with my conviction? Shouldn’t the concern be for the lost! Funny how my lack of acceptance of this holiday irritates both Christians and non-Christians alike.
I just wonder why?

Why would you think anyone cares about what you do on Halloween!!! Quite trying to convince people that this is a bad day. You are not the great white savior of the world and are ignorant to what that day represents!

Deliverer, this is the beauty of blogging. I have not forced you to read or follow any of my posting, yet you feel compelled to do so. Good for you, come and go as you wish and please feel free to share your thoughts.
It’s exciting to see that you too understand that it is God who it the Great (but not white) Savior.
Bottom line, I know God cares and wishes for all His children to openly express themselves. So, God bless and happy trails, until we meet again.

Larry,
I appreciate your post regarding Halloween. For someone in your position, your sheep need to know where you stand on the issue. Your approach is practical and it seems like you are keeping the emphasis where it should be…on the good news of Christ.
Have a great weekend!

Gee, look at me! See how good a person I am. I’ve even brainwashed my child to emulate all my actions without thought! Who is seeking the glory now, is it you?
Halloween is over, lets get back on the tracks of normal people!
